Indonesia From Outside #1: Closest Definition of Paradise

Nope, my friend, the title is not a promotional crap. I was surprised myself, that is why I thought it is worth noting in a blog posting. This is based on a real conversation I had.

I was in a meeting and I met this young guy, he is from Angola. After some time he asked, "Are you from Angola? You have a Portuguese name"
"I would've spoken Portuguese to you! No, I am from Indonesia"
He looked surprised and got so excited. "Indonesiaa?? Oouw... Terima kasih, Apa kabar?"
I was shocked to hear him speaking Indonesian. "Baik! Wow, where did you learn that?"
"I worked in Jakarta for some months. Whereabout in Indonesia are you from?"
    "Jakarta"
"Ooouw, I love your city so much! And in overall, I love your country. I took a chance to go around in the region there, you know, southeast asia,  still I liked Indonesia the best. You know before I left to Indonesia, everyone made a big deal with travel warning on terrorist and all that stuff. But when I was there and lived there, I felt like I wanted to stay there. I was so sad that I had to leave."

As if he forgot about the intention of our meeting at that time, he continued.

"You have everything there in Indonesia. Good food, good people, biodiversity, rich culture. Let's pick Jakarta. Such a big city with the tall buildings, but still very green, blended with nature. And when you go outside that city, oh, your country is so blessed with  natural beauty."
"Really? Well, I dont think it is so true what you said about Jakarta, I feel headache now just to think about its messiness, but thank you anyway!"
"Haha, I know you want to complain about the traffic, don't you? Traffic problem is everywhere in the world especially in such a big city like Jakarta. But yeah, I have to admit the traffic does not help too much"

Staring at the ceilings as if he tried to remember something, he kept continuing on. "What I like the most about Indonesia is that it is so diversed. It just has everything.. the culture is so rich and authentic, and by the way, you can do lots of good shopping since everything is unbelievably cheap with good quality and oh ya, the plants! I love the plants"
    "The plants?"
"Yes, the plants! You know, they are so many in types and so, so cheap! I bought a lot of plants in Bandung"
"Yeah, you are right. I took it for granted when I lived there. And then since I worked outside my country, in UK and here in Angola, I just realized how green Indonesia is. You would never know if you don't have anything to compare to."
"Ya, exactly.. I am planning a vacation to Indonesia. I want to go back and visit. I miss the beautiful Bali, you know, the island is the closest definition of paradise. You should be proud of your country. Even I feel thankful that I had the chance to live there for couple of months."
I winked, "Of course I am proud."

And at which part of Jakarta is that?

It's true, we've taken things for granted. Lotsa foreign friends who visited Indonesia were dazzled to see how beautiful the landscape and plantation is in our country.

Anyway, I love this post, Nadia. Blogwalking ;) Hello to you!

I guess, for most of us whose been in-and-out of the country and seeing enough comparison from the best to the worst ones.. we may still call Jakarta and Indonesia is better :D, but then again.. guys, if we're not taking care of our own home.. pretty soon those will change and we'll start hearing some more or perhaps all of the negativities.. :D
